West End Cottages and the Windmill Inn

A photograph from 1904 shows a short row of substantial houses on the northern side of West Road running from Ladywell Cottage across what is now the entrance to Meadowfield.

There were five houses in total built out of stone with a projecting porchway in the middle two and all had a small front garden fenced off, facing the road. They appear on the first Ordnance Survey Map of 1859 so probably dated to the first half of the 19th century. One was apparently used as a pub around the middle of that century called the Windmill Inn, run by a Mrs. Margaret Allison.

The houses still appear on an aerial photograph taken in 1946 but have been demolished by the subsequent photograph taken in 1958.
