Ladywell Way: A 1961 Wimpey Estate

Ladywell Way is a small estate on the western edge of the modern Ponteland.

There were a lot of changes to Ponteland as the 1950’s was drawing to a close. There was a spurt of new house building both private and public. The council expanded the housing stock to the north of the village building the Thornhill Road council estate and the private building company, George Wimpey was active at the eastern end of the village constructing the Rigdley Drive estate which was followed in 1961 by a new estate here at the western end of the village, with housing built off West Road.

At this time George Wimpey was one of the largest house builders in the UK. They were helping to pioneer industrialised housing development, bridging traditional building techniques with modern systems and processes, bringing efficiencies of scale into house building which opened up home ownership to the masses. They produced houses which were technically modern but architecturally conservative which have aged well in the sixty plus years since they were erected. The houses are modest, functional and deliberately unpretentious.
