Lady Well: One of Ponteland's Three Wells

This was the site of one of Ponteland’s three public wells which supplied the village with drinking water before the arrival of mains water in 1911. Given its name, this probably had some religious significance prior to the Reformation. This was very common in this part of Northumberland, where many springs were associated with saints or the Virgin Mary, notably at nearby Holywell and just on the edge of Dinnington. It’s appropriate, but just a coincidence, that the site of the well is located just by the steps leading up to the modern St Matthews Roman Catholic Church.

The memory of the well lives on in the names of the adjacent Ladywell Cottage and Ladywell Way.
