From Direction Finder to Family Home

This large modern house at the end of Elm Road just off Rotary Way started life as a Second World War Direction Finding Station.

The station was one of two such stations set up in Ponteland during World War II, the other being just off Limestone Lane. It consisted of four 100ft high aerials surrounding a central block. These would detect incoming radio signals and by a process of triangulation using the minute differences in the timing of the signals, were able to pinpoint where they were coming from. This was called the Adcock Aerial System and was one of many such systems set up in the UK during the War to help protect the country from German attack.

After decommissioning, the buildings and field were used as a dog training centre before being converted into a private house.
