Cloggs Cottages, on the 1846 Tithe Map

There are a pair of old stone buildings just by the Church gate. Although these have been extensively altered over the years, they do appear on a Tithe map of the village dating from 1846 making them some of the oldest properties in the village. Ponteland – One Thousand Years of History labels them Church Gate Cottages but elsewhere Cloggs Cottages. It was the latter name which was probably most used as a path ran from the cottages to a well next to the river called Cloggs Well. A small row of 1920’s houses were built by the path, backing onto the river, and these became known as The Cloggs.
