Clickemin Bridge on the Old Toll Road

Clickemin Bridge is almost unnoticeable today but marks where the old Newcastle – Ponteland Toll Road crossed Fairney Burn at the eastern edge of the village, close to Poneland Golf Club and where the road direction changed on the approach to the much larger Ponteland Bridge.

The original bridge probably dated to the setting up of the Turnpike Trust in 1748 which authorised the trustees to build bridges along the route of the road. At the end of the 19th century, the newly created Northumberland County Council took over the responsibility for the roads and bridge was replaced in 1911 to cope with growing traffic along the route and widened in 1955 to make it more suitable for increasing motor traffic.
